The finalists for the Independent Games Festival’s Mobile Games Competition offer a snapshot of what’s happening in the world of on-the-go games. In a word: iPhone. Everyone wants to make games for the slick gadget, and its sibling, the iPod Touch. The problem is: How do you make your game stand out in the crowd?

Remember that blip on the Xbox Live this week that said a Ninja Gaiden 2 Demo was coming soon? The “demo” has now gone live, and we hate to break it to you, folks, but it turns out that demo really means “video of someone playing the demo.” Yep, we’re disappointed, too, and a bit angry at the misleading title — by convention, demo in the gaming world tends to be interactive. (Unless, of course, the game really is just us watching someone else play the game.) Creator Tomonobu Itagaki did assure that a demo is coming “at some point.” Ninja Gaiden 2 is out for blood June 3.

PS3 is a sexy piece of tech. Its library of games, from Killzone 2 to Metal Gear Solid 4, appeal to the hardcore gamer … but what about kids? PS3 is still in its infancy, so it’s unsurprising that it’s failed to catch the attention of children and family gamers. That might change soon though, as Sony is finally conducting focus groups in Japan catered to the younger audience.
Siliconera reports that Sony is looking for participants as young as elementary school students to take part in a testing session at Sony’s Tokyo offices. These individuals will give their opinions on upcoming PSP and PS3 games. Half-day participants will get 2500 yen compensation (about $25), while full day participants get 5000 yen and a free lunch. Imagine that! A job that pays you for playing PlayStation games.

NECA’s Gears of War inspired figures are heading to the UK in a special Delta Squad box set, according to Electronic Theatre. Originally available in various packages across North America, the special UK release of the Delta Squad package will include fan favorite characters (sans the Carmine brothers) Marcus Fenix, Dominic “Dom” Santiago, Augustus “Cole Train” Cole and Damon “The Annoying One” Baird, as well as new weapons and accessories exclusive to the set.
The series also includes a feature some gamers would prefer to do without: The ability to completely repel the opposite sex if located within 30 feet of your bedroom.

Now that 2008 has come to a close with both
team X3F and the
X3F community deciding the best games of 2008, we’re feeling a little ‘08 nostalgic for some reason. Maybe we have an attachment disorder or are just in awe of how amazing 2008 was, but whatever the case, we wanted to revisit last year. So, we dug through the official X3F statistical library and uncovered the top fifteen most trafficked stories of 2008. All of which can be viewed in their news glory after the break.
According to the traffic reports, Rock Band, Call of Duty, Gears of War, Xbox hardware revisions and NXE Avatars were all the rage in ‘08. Interesting stuff. Oh how we miss you already 2008. You were good to all of us, even the bad fanboys. But now, we say goodbye and welcome 2009 into our hearts as we look forward to what gaming news is yet to come.

Some good deals here for those looking to expand their PSP collections.
Our pick? Viewtiful Joe. If you’re looking for some mini-games, you may be interested in WTF. MLB and NBA are both rather solid sports titles for the handheld. Just make sure you avoid Gangs of London at all costs.

Today,
Major Nelson has announced that an X-Blades demo is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace. If X-Blades managed to slip under your radar, we wouldn’t blame you. All you really need to know is that the game features a scantily clad lady slicing and dicing bad guys with swords. Oh, the lady is attractive too. That’s important. You can add the demo to your 360 download queue right here.

I mentioned the Leading the Cavalry achievement earlier, the achievement that requires 75 mounts to… well, achieve. The big question is, is that actually possible? Let’s find out!
Let’s use a Forsaken for our example, since they have no factors working against them like racial boundries on mounts. Keep in mind that some races will have a harder time, like Tauren can’t use two of the five Horde mounts, and Gnomes don’t allow anybody but Gnomes and Dwarves to use mechachickens.
The Horde has Peacocks, Raptors, Wolves, Skeletal Horses, and Kodo. From a glance at Wowhead, there seems to be…
